Finding new residential building sites in Carlton can be difficult.
In this case however, an original single storey Victorian Cottage, lost within a 1930’s 2 storey overbuild, followed by a 1960’s doggy ‘weekend’ face lift had created a nightmare of a building. The best approach was to start again with a new design and new structure.

Our clients wanted a smart inner city residence. A home that would cater for their busy work schedule
and their first child. They needed a warm and inviting living, meals and kitchen area, a study, two
bedrooms, two bathrooms and a laundry. On site secure parking was a ‘must have’.

The building site was small with an east/west orientation. In order to get abundant daylight into the
building it was decided to create a north facing highlight window to run the length of the first floor
with a roof skylight running the length of the stairwell. This provided direct controlled sunlight into the
first floor rooms. The stairwell skylight works with the open tread stair as an internal light court extending
to the ground floor.

To suit the clients the master bedroom had to have a walk in dressing area and en-suite, or at least direct
bathroom access. Due to site constraints this was achieved by having a dual use bathroom/en-suite. Two
entries to a centrally located bathroom allowed for this.

The rear facing living room opens to a paved outdoor terrace with bamboo planting, built in BBQ and a
water feature. The space also allows for secure off street parking.
